Was a 57 Chevy
Red and White…
And kind of Heavy

For a Matchbox Car
And When I Thought About
Riding in It
…..I was Real Small

I’d Ride Through Small Towns
With Tiny Gas Stations
And…… Little People
All Blurry on the Sides

The Depth of Field Compressed
To Force My Focus
Lost in the Moment
Driving Through the Mess

That my Life had Become
…………Heavy for a Kid
A Burden on My Shoulder
It was easier to Run

Into a Fantasy….
Little Worlds of my own Creation
My Imagination was Fertile
So I Ran Into Them you See

I Ran from the Pain
I Ran from the Intrusion
Indulged in the Illusion
That I was Safe in My Seclusion

I Was a Broken Child
Hiding from the World
Looking to Find Myself
In a Dream Gone Wild

Sometimes I still live There
In the Basement I played In
……..And In My Dreams
In a Time that was Rare

I Drove Past the Old House the Other Day
The One I Grew Up In
Back When We Were a Family
The One Where I Played

The Sad Place Hung in Ruin
Brown Shingles, Peeling Paint
A Rusted Chevy on the Lawn
Not Red and White Like Mine but Black

That Place had Come and Gone
A Lifetime…..and yet a Moment Ago
………A Sober Reminder
That   You   Can’t   Go   Back
