Long Island Ode

Have you ever seen the Sun rise over Fire Island Light — on the Great South Bay?

Felt the gentle salty breeze and watched the seagulls gliding — at play?

Have you ever driven out East on Sunrise Highway all the way to Montauk — The End?

Felt your spirit soaring as you approach — sensing that your summer adventure’s about to begin?

Have you ever contemplated the awesome power of nature — as you gazed upon the Wilderness Breach?

Explored the sandy windswept dunes — and pondered the lessons they may teach?

Tell me, have you heard of the great William — who once strolled along these bay shores?

The one who was in the room where it happened — and signed a declaration that opened many doors?

Did you spoil a good walk while playing Bethpage Black — where a Tiger once prowled?

Or at Shinnecock Hills where an Indian Nation to this day still — must strive to remain proud?

Were you startled by the thunder — when it roared and rolled across Long Island Sound?

Did you seek shelter in the Planting Fields — where the lovely face of nature abounds?

While wandering along Gatsby’s golden coast — which begs to be explored,

Could you sense the power, the money — and imagine how the ’20s must have roared?

Have you hungered to dine in opulence at Oheka castle — a high relic of a Gilded Age?

Did the beautiful sight of its bucolic setting make you awestruck and wonder — who turned history’s page?

Have you ambled among the vineyards of the North Fork — as far as Orient Point?

Then boarded a Cross Sound Ferry to leave, thinking what a GLORIOUS place this island is — and that is very much THE POINT.
